Other Side of MACBA

Other-Side-of-MACBA,exterior-design

It seems a bit obstruse of the Architect Richard Meier to create a wall of South facing glass, particularly in a Mediterranean climate, and then cover it in brise-soleil. It does however create a dynamic internal space for the ramped circulation.

Modern Contemporary Exterior of MACBA Museum

Exterior-of-MACBA-Museume,xterior-design
It's quite unusual to see the plaza in front of Richard Meiers MACBA museum completely devoid of people as it's become a popular skateboarding spot.

Pictures...slowly getting there

I thought I would quickly post some pictures of my house of how it looks at the moment. Still so many things to add...mainly the final touches. The brown lounge and rug are from our old house, they look OK for now I suppose. I still need so oversized art pieces, cushions, rugs, vases and all the other stuff that makes it into a warm, welcoming space. You will notice that our fireplaces are in...not without dramas either. The builders cut the holes too big so the plasterers still have to come back and patch up the gaps. At night we all 'retire' upstairs to watch TV or read a book. I think we are finally getting use to the space of our house.

Exterior Design of MACBA

Exterior-Design-of-MACBA,exterior-design

This shot of Richard Meiers MACBA in Barcelona seems to be quite random and abstract but it is created from a very rational floor plan.

"The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, or MACBA) is situated in the Plaça dels Àngels, in El Raval, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Spain.

It was designed by Richard Meier & Partners (1987-1995). The building’s architectural style has strong references to Modernism. This large (120 by 35 meters) white building has much of its southern elevation glazed, providing the visitor with views across the plaza, and allowing natural light into the interior. It includes a La Central library, specialized in art books and publications." Source : Wikipedia

I am still here!

Hi...to all my wonderful blog friends.

I am still here, just having a small break from my blog but hopefully back in the next few days totally refreshed with more pictures. I am slowly decorating my house and our garage is almost empty of all our belongings. Some of our paintings are up so our so it is all beginning to take shape. We haven't stopped entertaining for the last 4 weeks and it has been fantastic...having the space and the kitchen to finally spread out and cook for all our guests.
I have a big event coming up this week, my friends 40th Birthday party that I am hosting. I think I am going to cope and the house is looking good with almost everything completed. I cant wait to take pictures of the house when I set it up for the party to show you all. I will not go over the top but rather just use what I have got already....this has been my philosophy since moving and decorating my home.
I also wanted to say a big HELLO to all my friends from work who have finally found my blog and starting to read it.
Anyway, I must go to check what has been happening with all my favourite blogs...I do miss you guys and I promise to start commenting again...I feel like I have neglected all my online friends...(a special big hello to A-M and Kelly& Victoria whose journey I have followed from the start)

10 Things You Must Have in The House

We love lists, don't you? We love reading other's people list too, mainly because we're lazy and sometimes it's nice to have other people to do the work so we don't have to think so hard.

We recently saw a list of 100 things you should do in LA before you die by Caroline on Crack and we thought it was great. For those who live in LA, it's a really fun blog to read. For those who live outside LA, it's a great resource to find things to do in LA if you visit.

So we thought we come up with our own list. Since this blog is about the home, we'll focus on that theme. And since 100 is way too many for our brains, here is a list of 10 things you should have in the house:

1) A fantastic bed. This is where you spend of your time and this is where you should splurge and buy the best possible mattress you can find. Hotel mattress are the best! We like the ones from Westin. They even teach you how to make up the bed at home.

2) Fantastic bed sheets. They don't have to be expensive. We find amazing ones at Nordstrom Racks that have very high thread count and get softer after each wash.

3) Fresh scented candles, and please, none of that Glade cheap stuff. Scented candles are like perfume, the cheap ones just give you a headache. We love Votivo and Dyptique.

4) Amazing wine. Even if you don't drink wine, have some anyway. Your guests would appreciate it.

5) A great sofa. This is another thing you should splurge on. Buy the best one that you can afford. You can always reupholster it later. We like ones from Moroni and Burton James.

6) Great books. Even if you don't have time to read, when you see books that you like buy them anyway; then stock them on the bookshelves to read later. Books give soul to the house, and they make you look smart, even if you are not (well, that kinda depends on what kind of books you buy...)

7) Great music. CDs are gone to the way side, and good things too, because they are messy and unattractive. Invest in an IPOD and a good sound system. If you have great wireless Internet, Pandora is amazing for free music.

8) Gorgeous home accessories. By home accessories we means things that add character and style to your house, like rugs, artwork, flowers, decorative pillows and such. Of course we will plug our own site, InsideAvenue.com, but we like ZGallerie too... Again, our mantra is less is more, and quality is better than quantify.

9) Fantastic cookware. Cooking is amazing relaxing and creative. Having great cookware inspire you. We love Sur La Table for high-end cookware. Williams Sonoma is a great store too.

10)A dog. Yes, a dog. A cat if you are not a dog lover. We're plugging dogs because they are so sweet, so loving, so adorable. There's nothing more comforting that coming home to a dog who is so happy to see you, all the time!

What about you, do you have a list of must-haves? Email us your list and we'll publish it.

Irrational Exuberance to Irrational Desperation in 60 Seconds

We don't know about you, but we have had enough with whole frugality thing that our whole country is in. Oh my god, can we do without one more article about how to make one chicken into three meals, how we can have all kind of fun doing free things like taking a walk in the park ? How many walks in the park can one possibly take anyway?

Now, we have nothing against taking a walk in the park, or cutting back for that matter. The economy still sucks, people are losing jobs--that much is clear. But all this cut back is DEPRESSING! Not to mention, if everyone stops spending, we'll have a serious stagflation problem. Look at what happened to the Japanese--their economy has stood still since the 80s.

-----------------------------
stagflation–noun

an inflationary period accompanied by rising unemployment and lack of growth in consumer demand and business activity.

------------------------------

While we don't encourage living beyond our means, we think everyone should spend a little, if they still can. No, we don't advocate spending your rent check on a pair of Pierre Hardy shoes, but if you can still afford it, and if you really, really want it--why not?

Buy less, but buy quality. Eat out less, but eat well. Spend less, but spend wisely.

And yes, do take that walk in the park, but in some cute shoes... You'll feel much better.

Georgian Houses Exterior

Georgian-Houses-Exterior,exterior-design
Pretty grand, and of course that was the intention. Baths Georgian houses were largely built by speculative developers like John Wood the elder and John Wood the younger. I wonder what they would think if they knew how much these houses are worth now.

' "The Circus" consists of three long, curved terraces designed by the elder John Wood to form a circular space or theatre intended for civic functions and games. The games give a clue to the design, the inspiration behind which was the Colosseum in Rome.

Like the Colosseum, the three façades have a different order of architecture on each floor: Doric on the ground level, then Ionic on the piano nobile and finishing with Corinthian on the upper floor, the style of the building thus becoming progressively more ornate as it rises. Wood never lived to see his unique example of town planning completed, as he died five days after personally laying the foundation stone on May 18, 1754.' (Source : Wikipedia)

Exeter lies about 10 miles inland from Exmouth so you might be surprised to learn it once had a thriving port. Now it's a pleasant place to spend an afternoon by the river, full of cafes, bars and antique shops.

The nickname of Gaudis Casa MIla, 'The Quarry' seems quite apt. The building looks like it's been carved from a solid lump of rock rather than built up stone by stone.

Near the Topkapi Palace there's an area of elegant timber framed buildings. Or so I thought. It turns out that having been destroyed by an earthquake they were re-built with concrete frames.

Dali Museum Exterior

The heart of the museum was the building that housed the town's theatre when Dalí was a child, and where one of the first public exhibitions of young Dalí's art was shown. The old theater was bombed in the Spanish Civil War and remained in a state of ruin for decades until Dalí and the mayor of Figueres decided to rebuild it as a museum dedicated to the town's most famous son in 1960. The museum also occupies buildings and courtyards adjacent to the old theater building.
